Why choose a non-salt based high-performance de-icer over a traditional salt-based de-icer?

Winter and freezing conditions can create a number of challenges across a range of industries.  From preventing works being carried out on construction sites because of ice and snow on key surfaces to needing to deice car parks, runways and train tracks for safe operation.

Thankfully, there are a range of de-icers and anti-icers that can be used to remove frost and ice and prevent it forming in the first place. But depending on the formulation of the product they could have unwanted corrosive consequences and not all de-icers and anti-icers perform as desired – quickly and efficiently without leaving residue.

Traditionally, rock salt is used as a de-icer as it lowers the freezing point of water to melt ice and prevent frost formation. However, it does have limitations such as:

  • it is ineffective at low temperatures
  • it’s highly corrosive to metal, concrete and other materials
  • it can contaminate soil, water and other environmental material and habitats
  • it can also leave a gritty residue which whilst it can provide additional traction it is unsightly and can be tracked indoors where it can damage floors and carpets and lead to increased cleaning and introducing the salt into waterways.

However, there are alternatives that aren’t based on a salt-formation such as DeCAL DeICE which is non-corrosive, efficient in low temperatures and environmentally responsive.

When there is the possibility of the de-icer or anti-icer coming into contact with, or is required to be used on, concrete and steel DeCAL DeICE is an ideal solution as it is corrosion free and therefore can protect concrete, steel and in turn vehicles and infrastructure from the harmful damage of salt. Because of this, it can also prove to be a cost-effective solution as the lifespan of infrastructure and materials can be extended as they aren’t corroded by the salt.

Owing to its bio-derived formation it’s also an environmentally responsible product, so that if it was to find its way into soil and waterways, it wouldn’t pose a negative impact on environments. This is a key consideration for a number of industries where their environmental practices and procedures are often reviewed and require documentation on the measures being taken to protect people and the environment.

The high-performing de-icer is also highly versatile in its applications as such it can be used in bridges and tunnels to quickly and efficiently remove ice and snow that could pose issues if thaw and fall. And as it can be used in sub-zero conditions it can be used as an anti-icer to prevent ice forming in the first place. Which can be especially beneficial in high traffic areas to ensure safe and reliable operations such as at airports and railways where everything from the tracks and runways to the trains, planes and platforms often require treatment to remove ice and snow and prevent ice forming again.
